Himachal: Kanwar Harisingh was helpful to the needy

 In 1974, along with his associates, he established Himotkarsh Sahitya, Sanskriti and Jan Kalyan Parishad Registered Society, which has now taken the form of a leading voluntary organization of the state. At present, 12 branches of this institution are carrying out the projects of education, health, upliftment of the poor, women empowerment and social service in the state.


Inspired by the basic concept of Nar Seva-Narayan Seva, late Kanwar Harisingh, who devoted his entire life to the field of social service, worked for the help of the poor and needy throughout his life. He continued to work for the help of the needy section of the society till his departure from this mortal world on July 27, 2020. Kanwar Harisingh not only made exemplary contribution in the field of social service, but he will always be remembered for his important role played in the employee politics of the state for nearly 25 years. He was a flamboyant and influential staff leader, competent officer, Veteran Journalist, who played his every role well and left a deep impression on the hearts of the people. Kanwar Harisingh will always be an inspiration for social organizations. On the occasion of his second death anniversary on Wednesday, 27th July, social organization Himotkarsh Parishad is trying to pay true tribute to him by organizing service functions. Before retiring in 1998 from the post of General Manager of Scheduled Castes and Tribes Development Corporation and Women Development Corporation in Himachal Government, Kanwar Harisingh worked in various positions in the Central and State Governments. After starting his career as a Customs Officer in the Land Customs Department of the Government of India, he also worked in the Government of Himachal Pradesh as Extension Officer Industries, District Manager and PO of DRDA.



Kanwar Harisingh was the leading leader of Himachal Non-Gazetted Employees Federation of 2.5 lakh employees in the state for almost two and a half decades. As the State Secretary General of the Non-Gazetted Employees Federation, he was recognized as a militant leader, who constantly struggled for the interests of the employees. Under his leadership, the Employees Federation fought two major agitations in the state, paving the way for sustainable policy making for the employees. At the same time, he was also the head of the State Gazetted Officers Association. Kanwar Harisingh remained engaged in the field of social service since childhood. He was the National General Secretary for more than three decades of the All India Social Association Association representing Himachali institutions all over the country at the national level. Through this, he raised the voice of Himachal on appropriate forums. Kanwar Harisingh was also the Founder General Secretary of the National Society for Prevention of Blindness Himachal Branch. He also played an important role in making Himachal Pradesh the first cataract free state of the country by completing the task of 100% eye check-up of school children in the state. Kanwar Harisingh is also the Senior Rotarian of Rotary International District 3070. Apart from the Gadfrey Brewery Award, he has also been awarded with Rotary's Higher Award for Service Above Self. While Rotary Ratna Award and National Award in Eye Service has also been received. As the head of the Una Rotary Club, in 1986, he started the Rotary Movement towards the village by establishing the world's first Rotary Village Corps in Ispur village of Una district. He played an important role in establishing a leprosy ashram in Una and rehabilitating 22 families of leprosy victims and making them capable of leading a normal life. At the same time, campaign was launched by motivating local organizations in village-village to organize eye check-up and operation camps. He also continued to support the Premashram established for retarded children.


Important contribution in the establishment of ESuper Ayurvedic Hospital and Rotary Eye Hospital Dhusada: He had an important role in making the hospital built through RVC at Ispur in Una district, a Government Ayurvedic Hospital of 10 bed capacity. At the same time, in collaboration with Palampur Rotary Eye Foundation, he made a significant contribution in the establishment and operation of Rotary Eye Hospital in Dhusada village. The first blood bank in the regional hospital in Una was established through the Rotary Club. Establishment of Physiotherapy Center at Una Headquarters and Rotary Chowk at Una Headquarters are some of the important works done in the social and public sector in his district.


Una got the first government women's college in the district due to the efforts of Kanwar Harisingh Established Lala Jagatnarayan Himotkarsh Girls College in Kotla Khurd area, which has now been acquired by the state government. This college has the distinction of being the first government women's college in the district, which will play an important role in providing higher and vocational education to the girls of the area in the coming times. Apart from this, the Government Senior Secondary School in Dangoli village is also the fruit of his efforts. Kanwar Hari Singh was a fearless journalist. At the same time, he continued to provide voice to the issues related to social concerns.
